Transmission Efficiency of the Strain PVYNTN by Commonly Captured Aphids in Tunisian Potato Fields
S. Boukhris-Bouhachem,J. Rouze-Jouan,R. Souissi,L. Glais
Plant Pathology Journal , 2011,
Abstract: In the context of Potato virus Y epidemiological study, fourteen aphid species were selected to investigate their relative transmission efficiency in laboratory using tobacco plant tests Nicotiana tabacum var. Xanthi. These aphid species were the ones most often trapped in Yellow Water Traps (YWTs). Transmission efficiency was evaluated in both winged and wingless individuals in cages under controlled conditions. The transmission efficiencies obtained varied from 3 to 95%. Besides Myzus persicae (Sulzer), a highly efficient vector, 13 other aphid species were screened for their capability of transmitting PVYNTN. Three aphid species, Aphis spiraecola Patch, A. gossypii Glover and Brachycaudus helichrysi (Kaltenbach), appeared to propagate PVY greatly, with transmission efficiencies of 73, 71 and 68%, respectively. Even though Aphis fabae Scopoli was less efficient, with only a moderate efficiency of 43%, it is also suspected of being implicated in PVY dissemination. In 60% of the cases, results obtained from wingless and winged forms were very close. Consequently, five aphid species seem to represent a real risk for the spread of viruses given their abundance in traps.
Polyphenols content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of extracts of some wild plants collected from the south of Tunisia

African Journal of Biotechnology , 2009,
Abstract: 25 wild plants were collected from the south of Tunisia. The dried aerial parts were extracted under a continuous reflux set-up in a Soxhlet extractor with hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. The extracts were screened for total phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Total phenolic contents were determined using a spectrophotometric technique, based on the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent and calculated as pyrogallol equivalents (PyE) per 100 g of dry weight (dw). Total phenolic content ranged from traces to 2225 ± 267 mg PyE/100 g dw in Periploca angustifolia hexane extract and Erodium glaucophyllum methanol extract, respectively. Total flavonoids and flavonols were measured by a colorimetric assay and expressed as mg of rutin equivalents (RuE) per 100 g dw and mg of quercetin equivalents (QuE) per 100 g dw respectively. The highest amounts of flavonoids of 315 mg RuE/100 g dw and of flavonols of 63 mg QuE/100 g dw was recorded in the ethyl acetate extract of Acacia radiana. The antioxidant capacity of all extracts was evaluated with the (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH and 2,2'-azino-bis [3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid]) ABTS tests. Several extracts showed antioxidant capacity higher than (butylated hydroxytoluene) BHT. Different trend was observed for each antioxidant system with respect to solvents used. All tested plants showed antimicrobial activity, but this activity depended closely on the nature of the solvent used and of the microorganism tested. Rhanterium suaveolens ethyl acetate extract showed the largest spectre of antibacterial activity and Bassia indica ethyl acetate extract showed the highest antifungal activity. Interestingly, some of the collected plants had a high phenolic content and powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. These plants may serve as sources of antioxidants with new chemotypes and potential beneficial health properties.

This article intends to appraise the bias (sociological French term used as an indicator for alterations of the judicial sources quality) appearing in the transcripts of criminal proceedings. Based on case study (the principality-canton of Neuchatel (Switzerland) from 1806 to 1876) where the conserved criminal registers contain all official reports of the court, this essay underlines the fact that behind their so-called objectivity and exhaustiveness, these sources reveal a lot of traps. At first it gives an overview of the different kinds of bias we met and then it presents the ways we took to get around or to take advantage of these them.

About Popper-Carnap controversy
Samir Boukhris Y Marco Cannone
The paper gives a new light on the controversy between Popper and Carnap on the interpretation of probability and its use to solve the problem of induction. In his later work on probability and inductive logic, Carnap came nearer to the bayesian positions stressing an important shift from his earlier work. If we take into account these changes in Carnap" s system, the controversy between the two philosophers becomes meaningless and there is not even any overlapping between their interests.

Abstract: Ovarian and peritoneal localizations of tuberculosis are rare. They raise the problem of differential diagnosis with malignancy. In this regard, we reported the case of a 25-year-old woman who presented with bilateral pseudo tumoral ovarian mass mimicking an advanced ovarian carcinoma with ascites. Extemporaneous examination of the peritoneum confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculosis and avoided bilateral annexectomy that could compromise the fertility of the patient.

Abstract: Chronic total occlusions (CTOs) remain one of the last challenges in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). During the last decade, following the Japanese pioneers, the interest of interventionalists’ community in CTO PCI has dramatically increased leading to an important development in equipment and techniques (1,2), and a growing expertise among dedicated operators, both resulting in increased success rates (3)

Abstract: Coronary chronic total occlusions (CTOs) are defined as an occluded coronary segment with thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow 0 for ≥3 months duration (1). According to EuroCTO club consensus, the occlusion duration could be divided into 3 levels of certainty: (I) “certain” (angiographically confirmed), in cases where a previous angiogram performed greater than 3 months ago, confirmed the presence of TIMI 0 flow; (II) “likely” (clinically confirmed), objective evidence of an acute myocardial infarction in the territory of the occluded artery without other possible culprit arteries of more than 3 months before the current angiogram; (III) “undetermined”, TIMI 0 flow and angiographic anatomy suggestive of long-standing occlusion with stable anginal symptoms unchanged in the last 3 months or evidence of silent ischemia (1). Coronary CTOs represent a frequent lesions’ subset observed in ~15% of patients undergoing coronary angiography, with a higher prevalence in those with previous coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (2,3). Previously considered to be an indication for surgical myocardial revascularization, the interest of interventional community in CTOs has exponentially grown during the last decade, particularly thanks to an important development in dedicated equipment and techniques (4), and has led to the achievement of high rates of success and low rates of complications by expert operators

Abstract: The essential oil P. graveolens was administered daily and orally to the rats at two doses of 75?mg/kg and 150?mg/kg body weight (b.w.) for 30?days. The chemical composition of P. graveolens essential oil, body weight, serum glucose, hepatic glycogen, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), the components of hepatic, and renal and serum antioxidant systems were evaluated. The hypoglycemic effect of rose-scented geranium was compared to that of the known anti-diabetic drug glibenclamide (600?μg/kg b.w.).After the administration of two doses of essential oil of Pelargonium graveolens L’Hér. together with glibenclamide which is known by its antidiabetic activities and used as reference (600?μg/kg b.w.), for four weeks, the serum glucose significantly decreased and antioxidant perturbations were restored. The hypoglycemic effect of P. graveolens at the dose of 150?mg/kg b.w. was significantly (p<?0.05) more effective than that of glibenclamide. It is through the histological findings in hepatic and renal tissues of diabetic rats that these beneficial effects of geranium oils were confirmed. It suggests that administration of essential oil of P. graveolens may be helpful in the prevention of diabetic complications associated with oxidative stress. Our results, therefore, suggest that the rose-scented geranium could be used as a safe alternative antihyperglycemic drug for diabetic patients.
